Job Title: Dyslexia Specialist

Primary Purpose:
Coordinate the literacy program for the campus. Collaborate with campus and district staff to provide educational opportunities for the students.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
- Valid Texas Teaching Certificate
- Certified Academic Language Therapist
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Evaluate and interpret assessment data to determine profile of a student with dyslexia
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to meet timelines
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Assists classroom teachers in examining current practices and beliefs.
- Provides staff development for teachers focusing on the reading program adopted by the campus and other related reading programs.
- Teaches demonstration lessons for classroom teachers.
- Observes classroom teachers during reading instruction.
- Serves as a mentor for teachers as the implement reading strategies and techniques within the classroom.
- Conferences with individual teachers to problem solve and plan for the campus reading/writing program.
- Coordinates reading assessments and reports results periodically to the campus administrator.
- Obtains and uses evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensures that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs.
- Recommends policies and best practices to improve campus reading program.
- Monitors daily operations of the campus/district reading program.
- Ensures that programs are cost effective and funds are managed wisely.
- Compiles budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
- Maintains current inventory of campus/district reading materials.
- Teaches and/or assists with literacy groups as needed.
- Presents subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies and administrative regulations.
- Plans and uses appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
- Creates an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students.
- Applies and enforces student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
- Establishes and maintains open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals and teachers.
- Maintains professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents and community members.
- Serves as a resource for teachers and administrators as they select reading materials and programs.
- Stays current regarding new theories and developments in research based reading practices.
- Performs other duties as assigned
